THE knowledge of art which we expect in "cultured" people and which we supply in our universities, is a knowledge of essence. We enquire particularly when and where and by or for whom the works were made; by a mechanical comparison of BLAAAAA BLAAAAAAAA BLAAAAAAAAAAAA BLAAAAAA BLAAAAA....that's where my mind is at and I really can't read anymore of this crap. College material is like the most terrible crap you could ever read, and I thank god that I'm in an art school where only 10% of my classes involve reading.

good thing my Art teacher in my College dual enrollment class dosen't spew shit. She's very sensible and makes Art make sense, she's very practical about it, but at the same time she respects the beauty of it.

One thing I hated in school was the analizing of the books. "What do you think the author meant by this" "Personally I think he meant to write a story, enjoy it, publish it, and enjoy the fruits of being able to have his writing put food on the table" Teacher's don't like that kinda answer.

That is what I think. People want to find a "deeper" meaning while I would like to just be entertained.
And how do they know what the author wanted to do anyway? Did they ask them? I think not!

Oh lordie don't even get me started on this stuff.
I will say, however, that you're lucky Rookums. One of my teachers does everything he can to make it difficult to even understand the assignment. And then during a crit changes his mind on what the assignment really was. And TOTALLY grades on preference. I hate that. I could rant about this guy for ages. >.>;

Ya see that's what we do, read these things and try to figure out what these people are talking about (which is usually some deeper meaning behind art). It'd be ok, but the writers always talk like their way up high on some throne. Sorry but that does not work for me, I grew up a farmer, I play paintball, and basically I'm just a dumb brute who just happened to have some artistic talent. (oh and yea I don't know math, I probably have a 6th grade math lol)

Lol I remember that from my art history class. But in the actual art classes we learn art through practice. As in we do stuff.
But art has always been like that. Anyone who can't art tries to make it seem harder than it is. Any real artist simply does. Sometimes things are the way they are because it looked good and nothing else.

Wow, I'm glad I didn't pursue an art studio major like I was going to. This sounds like way less fun than it should be.
I agree about the analyzing of books. I'm sure a lot of literature has deeper themes, but most writers probably write just to write. I doubt they're thinking, "Hmm, what AMAZING thing can I write today that will impart great wisdom and meaning to the world?"
Yeah, no.

The Psych/English double major is not hearing this...she is blocking it out for the sake of her own sanity, and would like to hold that humans crave meaning (deep or otherwise) and go on a search/rescue for it on a daily basis.
