Character Name: Linda Melina Van Rossem…
Gender: Female…
Age: Fifty-Three…
Species/Breed: Ailuropoda melanoleuca…
Current Occupation: Seraph, oversees records, often called the “Book Keeper”…
Personality: Linda is a conniving and deceitful person, who barely can remember her true self. Outwardly, Linda is wise, kind, gentle, caring, open-minded, and firm; like a mother. Inwardly, she is very harsh, judgmental, determined, stubborn, and cruel, but still has many redeeming qualities about her. She uses kind words to comfort and twist people to her wants and needs. On one side she is very relenting in trying to fit in with everyone else, but on the other, she has an edge of steel determination that helps her to reach her goals. She is often weary with doubt, wondering what she is. Her nature is to label things in black and white descriptions, so why is it so hard for her to decide whose side she’s on? Linda can’t even decide which side is good or bad. For now, she’ll just go along, and see what comes her way…
Appearance: Green eyes peer out from under her grey hair; they are pools of healing, suggesting a comforting shoulder to cry on, and an open ear. Her markings do not differentiate from another giant panda’s, and often add to her resolve that all decisions are black and white. She is very fit for her age and keeps her cheerleader figure from her high school days. Linda has very long, iron-straight, grey hair that she tends to keep in neat buns or under ski hats. Her smile is sweet and understanding, often given to young Fledglings and Apprentices that find themselves at a debriefing in front of the Seraphim. Otherwise, her expression is kept professional and firm. Linda likes to wear all black, turtle-neck sweaters, black flared pants, and business jackets to work. At state functions, she wears beautiful, floor-length, black designer dresses that emphasize her good figure. When she is tramping around town, however, she enjoys wearing many layers with natural, earth colors; and tends to stuff her grey hair into a green ski hat, leaving only a few strands of hair to cover the Guild mark on her nape…
Background: Linda was born as an only child to a well off, Aristocratic family, Emily and Nicholas Van Rossem. She was raised with many privileges in her life, but was constantly reminded of her good fortune. With this advice being thrown in her face every day, she grew resentful of her status, and kept trying to emphasize her ordinariness. Linda moved schools and tried to create a new self image. She eventually was thought of as a sweet, yet poor girl who was a mother figure to nearly everyone. Linda was content with this self-image, and continued to pretend it was so. She developed a crush on an older student, Isaac, and eventually won him over at the beginning of high school. She grew to love him, and he adored her, they were the perfect couple. That is, until her parents found out. They went and made a fuss over it in court over alleged claims, and eventually had a restraining order put on Isaac. His parents were horrified at the accusations against him, and sent him overseas to a military camp. Isaac was furious with her, being with her had ruined his life; so he vowed to never see her again. Linda was swept away in a rain of angry stares, lonely nights, guilt, and depression. Soon everyone knew who she was at school, they also knew her title. She was bombarded with questions, and backstabbing friends. Once they realized how well off she really was, the cheerleader squad offered her a position on their team. Searching for comfort and acceptance, she accepted. Linda rose on the status quo at her school with the position, much to her discomfort, and found herself “friends” with people she didn’t even know. She developed a slightly cruel and judgmental character but was adept at hiding it under her old kind and gentle personality. Soon she became captain of the cheer leading squad. Smart, pretty, and very popular, Linda still was unhappy with her life. She decided to use her summer to participate in a college course that would help her find her strengths and weaknesses. Linda proved to be very proficient in math and problem solving; her parents were ecstatic. During the school year, they hired tutors to teach her college level math outside of school on top of her everything else. She grew weighted down with the responsibilities placed on her, but was grew determined not to complain. Linda graduated with high marks in mathematics, but low, yet passing, grades on everything else. Her parents didn’t care; they believed that she would do well in life if she had a good head for math. She moved on to college, majoring in accounting, and working at Dina’s on the side. After accidently overhearing a private conversation between two Powers, however, her world turned upside down. They noticed her listening, and kidnapped her that evening. While unconscious with the drug they gave her, she dreamed of the Gates. Linda woke up, groggy with sleep, in a plain, smelly hotel. She was soon interrogated by the two Powers, who wanted to know how much she knew, and who she worked for. Confused, she said nothing, which they took as a sign of resistance. They began to drug her again, meaning to arrest her, when she nervously spoke a code that meant “friend”. The Angels grew more convinced of her guilt, and began yelling at her, asking where she had learned that. Suddenly calm, she said in the most tranquil voice, “The Gates spoke to me.” Astounded, they drugged her and took her to a holding cell for further questioning. Linda was held for two days, being questioned and tested. Eventually, they formally asked her to join. She declined. They let her leave after bugging her, to keep an eye on her, and she returned to find she was fired from her job and her professors were close to failing her. Linda quickly caught up with her classes, offering no explanation for her absence, and begged money from her parents after she no longer had enough money to pay the rent. Though they loaned her the money, they gave her a hard time about it, and insisted that she paid them back with interest. Linda often dreamed of the Gates, and surprisingly, of Isaac, and suffered long, sleepless nights. Soon, defeated and weary, she looked for the Angels to accept their offer, but that is easier said than done. They would laugh at her and kick her out of the building. She eventually finished her courses, and moved back in with her parents. To try and cheer her up, they took her to Dina’s as a treat. Linda only stared at her hands, at people around her, growing sadder as she remembered her dreams. When they were about to finish up their meal and leave, her eyes spotted a Guild mark on the paw of a scratch. Overjoyed, she stopped him as he made his way to the bathroom, and recited the code for “friend”. Suspicious, the scratch asked for her status and position. Linda quickly told him her story, saying she wanted to join, and that not joining had been a big mistake on her part. The man just laughed, and told her that she was not worth his time. Now determined to convince him, she went into careful detail about her dreams involving the Gates. Eventually the Seraph gave in, telling her where and when she would be to begin the initiation. Linda went to the agreed place, where she became an Apprentice after the Table agreed on her right to join the Hour Glass Guild. During that ritual, she changed, like everyone else had. She gave up her happiest memory…Isaac. With such a gaping void in her, she tried to fill the emptiness in any way possible. But with no success, only the Gates had any hold on her, and only the Gates could fill the emptiness. She became a Fledgling, specializing in psychology and organizing. Linda soon gained many of the Seraphim’s favor, and was kept in confidence to many secrets. She used this to her advantage, using people like puppets with no remorse. She became the overseer to all Angel records and accounts. They named her “Book Keeper”. At the age of forty-three, she was invited to sit at the Table as a Seraph. Linda gracefully accepted, and began focusing her motherly charm on the younger generations, making them indebted to her. Over the years she has made countless “allies” as well as many enemies…
