Character Name: Solta Faris, Sol
Gender: Male
Age: 24
Species/Breed: 1/4 Arctic Fox, 1/4 Gecko, 1/2 Ki Lin
Current Occupation: Angel, middle ranking, hourglass on his back scales between his shoulders.
Personality: Looking at Sol, you would think him to be a rather cold individual. But do not let his appearance, as he is actually a rather warm fellow. He does not, however, welcome strangers with open arms. He might be friendly, but he is in no way 'peppy.' In fact, Sol has a fairly calm demeanor.
Intelligence wise, Sol is slightly above average. He's good at things like problem solving and puzzles, but has a real problem with organization. He arranges things according to a system that apparently only he knows the rules too. His home isn't a complete wreck, but it's a bit different. He has a functionality about him, he likes things that work. Often times, he sacrifices aesthetics for purpose. Therefore, his house isn't one of the most welcoming.
The hybrid's self-esteem often fluctuates. While he knows he has a purpose and is proficient at what he does, he sometimes feels emotionally unneeded. Sol is also very self conscious about his image. He doesn't think anybody could find such a strange hybrid to be attractive, especially one with such an unnatural fur color. Sometimes he mopes in front of his mirror about this, only having one in his house. He wouldn't let anyone know this, of course, as he tends to clam up about his own emotions. For this reason, he feels it's hard to really get close to people, fueling the earlier problem of feeling unneeded.
Although he feels silly about it, Sol can actually be a rather romantic individual. He does want to settle down with someone soon, but is scared of such a big commitment, as the biggest one he has made in his life was to the Angels. Sol has never had a very long lasting romantic relationship with anyone, for various reasons.
Appearance: Sol is a rather interesting hodge-podge of animals both in appearance and breeding. His face is like that of a deer's, a trait passed to him from his Ki Lin mother. Though with forward facing eyes and a set of ivory canines, he does still retain some of the carnivorous genes from his paternal arctic fox grandmother. However, his coloring, which is a surprisingly pleasing mix of blues, greys, and golds, bears absolutely no resemblance to his vulpine grandmother. Rather, from the head down he mostly takes after his gecko grandfather and Ki Lin mother.
As established, his eyes are like a fox's, as are the ruffs of fur on his cheeks. Sol's black nose is much like a deer's, with a small patch of thin white fur around and above it. Above both eyes there are dusty gold scales, which can appear like eye shadow from a distance. Between his eyes, which are a bluish grey matching parts of his fur, there are two stripes of the same dusty gold scales, almost in wide U shapes. Crowning his head is a head-full of ice colored hair. Parted on the left and reaching just to the end of his neck, two small grey horns poke up from in between his locks on his forehead. They are placed vertically from each other, the one above noticeably longer than the one below. His ears, which look to be a cross between a fox and a deer's, are dipped in dark grey.
Starting at the base of the back of his neck is a long, wide set of bright gold scales, which have much more sheen then the small scales on his face. The set of scales on his back cover the back of his shoulders, down his back, to the base of his tail, tapering out onto the topside of his tail. Viewing Sol from the front, it would be impossible to see these back scales.
The front of Sol's torso is also scaled, but bears much more resemblance to his gecko ancestry. These scales cover his pectorals, abdomen, reaching to his lower region (but you're going to have to offer a lot to get much farther than that). The scales here aren't nearly as impressive as those on his back, being pale yellow in color and less pronounced. They have a bit of a gloss to them, and touching his stomach would feel much like touching the smooth surface of a snake or gecko, which Sol will tell you is not slimy or wet in the very least.
The rest of his body is covered in peculiar grey, blue, and grey-blue fur, with black skin underneath. Sol's fur varies in thickness, being particularly thick on his lower legs, tail, arms, and around his neck. From the waist down his still bears resemblance to his ki lin ancestry, having black cloven hooves. Sol's body type is rather lean, being an angel. He exercises often to keep in good physical condition, not to look good but to perform well. Therefore, his shape is not like a body builder's by any stretch of the imagination, but rather he has packed on the muscle where he thinks it matters most. His fighting style is very quick to work with his body style, and often employs ambush tactics. While he would love to be, Sol is not a very great shot. He knows how to shoot a gun, of course, but it is very common for him to miss the first couple of bullets. He also has very limited experience with hand weapons, aside from more primitive weapons like a crowbar or baseball bat.
An interesting physical note about Sol is his hands. His palms and fingers are covered in thousands of setae, exactly like a gecko's. These can cling to any surface, except Teflon of course, and he is capable of holding his weight along with the weight of another small man or a female. He can moderate the use of these pads, and usually wears or keeps hand a pair of fingerless gloves in case he needs to make a vertical climb for whatever reason.
Background: Sol was, like most St. Lucent residents, was born and raised on the island. He was born to Mr. Faris, a half fox half gecko business man, and Mrs. Faris, a pure-bred ki lin Councilwoman. Since their marriage and subsequent children, Mrs. Faris has found that she lost some friends in the Council as well as a bit of power. This did not stop the ki lin from raising her oldest son in the mindset of being an angel and possibly a Council member himself one day.
Sol and his twin brother, Astril Faris were born during the winter months, December 31st to be precise. They were both named in dead languages, Solta meaning a snow that sparkles in the sun, and Astril meaning snow that sparkles in starlight. Fraternal twins, Solta and Astril didn't have much in common physically. One of these differences was that Astril was extremely weak, the cause theorized as being simple bad luck. Astril struggled with health until he was six, when he was taken by pneumonia a week before the twins' birthday. The whole family was devastated. In true child fashion, Sol blamed himself for his brother's death. He didn't know exactly why he did, but he was certain that whatever it was it was his fault.
After Astril's death, Sol went on to live a fairly normal life. He made A's and B's in high school, played on the tennis team, and wasn't a complete outcast. While he wasn't Mr. Popular, like that annoying collie jock that was a year ahead of him, Sol had plenty of friends and was sociable. He had a few girlfriends, but none really lasted more than a few months, and one or two had pretty nasty ends to them.
In his senior year of high school, his parents decided to have another child. Sol was not entirely too pleased about this decision, as he felt they were trying to replace him or Astril. Upon that, it wasn't a very efficient way to have children, especially since it matched up the two most expensive parts of a child's life: infancy and college. Though he still disliked their decision, the baby girl welcomed to the world during the summer grew quite a bit on her older brother.
When he came home from college, at which he spent two years, Sol would often care for and play with the little girl. The girl's name was Talini, which translated roughly to snow angel. Talini bore a very strong resemblance to Astril. Her fur was very pale with yellow hues like his, and she had a very small distribution of scales along her back which were a silvery blue. She didn't inherit very much from the gecko side, only a few markings like Sol's. Thankfully, she did not inherit her deceased brother's sickliness.
It was only natural that after he graduated college at 19, as he graduated high school at 17, Sol went on to start his training for Angelhood. However, it took him a while to figure out what it was he wanted to give up. He only had a part-time job and was giving that up to focus better on his new career, but that didn't feel like enough to him. He thought long and hard about what it was he wanted to give up. He wasn't necessarily religious, and quite enjoyed having all of his limbs. If he left his family, he knew poor little Talini wouldn't understand what happened to her big brother and why she could never see him again. It was while he was eating dinner one night that the idea hit him. He was looking over at a picture of him and his brother, taken the summer before Astril's death, sitting side by at a place he no longer recognized. He was going to give up his brother, a memory to which he had been clinging desperately to for sixteen years. He gave up all of the pictures of Astril he owned, as a symbolic motion, and fought the memory out of his mind. Every now and then he would feel a twinge of loss for his twin, but he would chase it out of his mind with vehemence.
Sol only recently completed his Apprentice Angel training. He is still a little green in the belt, and definitely not ready for an apprentice of his own. For now, he is fine with just doing his own thing for awhile.
