Character Name: Tryphena Jennet
Gender: Female
Age: 55
Species/Breed: Painted Bunting
Current Occupation: Owner of Antiquarian (Bookstore/library) It's a bookstore specializing in rare and antique books. In her private stash are some of the rarest and most unique (possibly illegal) literature in Lucent but that fact isn't exactly made public. It's not very well known but has been around for a long while.
Personality: Hena, as she is commonly called, is just about everything you imagine birdfolk being. She's flighty, timid, and easily startled. But lucky for her, her two brothers were a good bit rowdy and and taught her a thing or two about what good that does. Still easily startled she learned to recover quite manageably if not in any serious danger. She's got a bit of a harsh streak. Her tongue doesn't snip but she'll correct you if you're wrong. With every correction she;ll give you the look. A little something she's developed over the years. A look that let's you know you did something that wasn't exactly right. For keeping her nose in a book most of her life she had a good bit of common sense. But the one thing that gets her, the one thing that defies all common sense she has, is romance. She's secretly obsessed with it but does her best to hide it. It's a childish dream and one a woman as mature as herself should have long forgotten.
Appearance: At one time she was tall and thin. Now she's no spring chicken. Her gait has always lacked the grace of a swan; running into things most others catch in plain sight. If you knew her, or even watched her you'd guess it was because she was too busy fantasizing her own life to be a romance novel. Or maybe it was the awkwardly large feet. They're a blessing in disguise. If it weren't for the scaly shins she'd be a battered old bitty by now. Lucky for her, age treated her well. For a geezer she doesn't look half bad. Foliage is still downy soft but if you saw pictures of her grade school days you could tell they've lost some of the vibrancy they once had. A pair of spectacles balance on her big beak, a glasses leash keeping them from falling too far. They're not there because of old age. No, she's worn those for most of her life.
Her wardrobe, along with most everything in her life, dates her very well and goes to show how little she tries to catch the opposite sex. The good ol' brown suit is her favorite during business hours. A baggy off white blouse with the old cravat style collar and front, pinned with an old porcelain portrait style brooch, hides her descending breasts. The brown vest doesn't do much for her chest either and usually lays open. Her expanding buttocks is squeezed into a nice but dated pencil skirt, length to the knee. It seems like every year the skirt gets a little smaller too.
Upstairs, at home, she curls up on the couch in pastel, cute creature printed pajamas. That's about it, old suits and cute pajamas.
Background: Born into a large family with two older brothers and an older sister Hena found her niche quickly in life. Her father owned the bookstore they lived in for as long as she could remember. They all grew up keeping busy with their own interest. Her elder siblings taking to things outside of the bookstore. They all thought it was a boring old place that housed fire stock. Tryphena was the only one of her siblings to enjoy what her father did. She read every book in the store she could. Most nights were spent curled up in the bottom bunk reading. Youth went by in flash with her nose in a book. As puberty set in her interests changed. Not from books, just the content. Developing much like the story of an ugly ducking that never quite grew out of the duck phase she hadn't much but her imagination when it came to relationships and boys.
The books changed from just fantasies to whatever book had romance in it. Her dream in life became finding a perfect man to whisk her away to be a princess in a foreign land or any other variation on the story. But it was always the brave, young, dashing man she dreamed of and her father constantly poked at her about it. Eventually she grew into a woman. The romantic dream still embedded deeply within the little avian. Doing her best to disguise it she took up the real books in her father's store; the boring, and the unusual. For a few years she went to college hoping to be a librarian while working a job with her father at the family shop. The rest of her siblings had long since moved on in life to be their own, grown up individual. The brothers joined a Pack team, and her sister was attempting to be a successful News Anchor. When her father fell ill, Hena dropped most of her classes and took on running the shop with her mother. Eventually death caught the poor old bird and left the two hens. There was no way for Hena to keep going to college and dropped it to be with her mother who went on for a few more years but eventually joined her husband; leaving Hena to live by herself in the old shop on the not-so-good side of town.
Her siblings visit every once in a while and advise her to let the little store go and move somewhere else that's safer. But they don't know all the secrets hidden in the shelves.
