Through the din of snarls, whispers and loud voices Rook's ears flicked nonchalantly and he sat alone as if he diddn't hear a lick of it. He had a head ache, one of those bad pulsing ones, bad for business, it was a very good thing he wasn't on shift.
Looking down at his food, which was none too surprising, a very rare cut of meat, almost all red. It was small though, and all he had it was a glass of brandy, he wasn't very hungry lately. It was nearing the anniversary of his wife's death and usually everybody knew that was a bad time to bother him with trifles, if at all.
The noise of the crowd diddn't bother him though, it made it easier for him to think clearly, when he was alone it seemed like everything he thought branched out into a mess of large ones and after that he was lost.
He couldn't afford to be lost so he took a tentative bite.

Zarek sat down next to Rook with a loud thump. He knew that most people would be avoiding the wolverine right then. It was just that the man was so disagreeable when it came around this time of year. Of course he had lost his wife, but that was no excuse to hang around like a wet blanket.
"You need to let the black cloud of emotion lift off your shoulders." He told the other Angel as he took a bit out of his hamburger. Before he became an Angel he would have offered up a word about how the One Creator would be looking over his wife at this time, yet seeing as how he had given that up he offered a haft ass remark. "You still have your wife. She is in the child you both had. Nothing can bring her back man, but you have to look to the future."
Taking another bit out of his food he glanced at the piece of meat Rook was picking at he frowned. It was never good when the man didn't eat. Nudging him with his elbow Zarek tried to mumbled a question around the chuck of food he still had in his mouth. Giving up he swallowed before he tried again.
"How is your little Swan doing? Has he finally realized that all this will go a lot quicker if he just listened to you and did what he was told?"

"Please." said Rook moodily "Don't try to be my psychologist, Zarek, your the most ill qualified individual that's not in a straight jacket. Raising an eyebrow he shrugged "The kid's getting stronger every day...but he's still a little punk ass. I don't know what to do about his attitude, he'll never graduate unless he learns some self control".

"You know that I am one of the best qualified people to be you Psychologist though. Isn't that sad to think that someone you think should be in a straight jacket would be the best one to help you. Now you need to stop feeling sorry for yourself and realize that you can't change anything. She is gone and you're not. What are you going to do? Kill yourself?" This was almost the same talk that Zarek gave Rook around this time of year. Why did the man cry over spilled milk? Most likely because the milk was his wife, but it was still pointless.
"So our swan is still an ugly duckling. Who would have thought that?" Sarcasm coated is tongue like honey. "I mean after all he is just like you. Are you sure you never had any relationship with a bird?"

This invoked a thundering growl from Rook that was so loud and feirce made several people stop and stare. Rook glared back at them, and they went on there way whispering amongst themselves skitishly as the wolverine settled back into his chair and look Zarek in the eye.
"Will you please shut up about it"? The two of them went through this almost every year around this time, Rook couldn't see why Zarek just diddn't leave well enough alone, everyone else respected Rook enough to give him his space around this time but Zarek, who was ironically one of Rook's closest friends always overstepped his boundaries and acted like a goddamn moron.
Rook snorted but there was a glint of mischief in his gray eyes as he scoffed "I was never so disobedient or ornery as that "ugly duckling""!

Zarek watched Rook's whole fit without blinking. This was normal for him. Rook never really scared him any more. "Sit down and stop throwing a conniption already. You should have expected this talk. There is no reason for you to act like a five year old with his hand stuck in the cookie jar." Rolling his eyes he dropped the subject.
"You never acted like Athrun because you came into the Guild latter in life. Anyway he might listen to you more if you remembered his name. Hell, he isn't even studying under me and I know it. Sometimes I think you just act like you don't know his name to piss him off."

Rook shook his head in a very severe manner but the mischevious glint remained for a while untill he changed the subject. Might as well get into the conversation as it appeared it was not going away.
"Any good cases lately"? The question was spoken often, but Rook was one of those people who did not say something unless they meant it and did not ask something unless they wanted to be answered. The concept of small talk was abstract to words, he treated speech as if people had a specific amount of words and they should only use them well. "How's the weather"? when you knew it was cold and rainy as always was about as helpful as blind seeing eye dog or a scabby super model.
Rook was comfortable also with the subject of work, and cases more than anything. It was interesting but it was unpersonal enough for him to keep his hackles down. And keep his fucking robo-claws out the proverbial cookie jar.

"You are just so smooth Rook. You changed the conversation without my knowing it at all. I must learn from you some day." Zarek said with a smirk. If Rook didn't reply to his comment it was because he thought it was worthless. The tiger knew this, but he believed deep down inside when ever his friend came up against a question or comment that he didn't want to talk about he acted like it was a waste of his time. Just like he was doing now.
"Well, I have been working on this new device so that you could call your Skyboard from where ever it is and it will come. It is having some problems though. There are too many frequencies running through the air space of Lucent. Every board would have to have it's own frequency because if they didn't at least five would be flying at the Angel that call the board at once. I also have to find a wave length that isn't being used by everyone and their mother.
"I suggested that the Guild pay for a board for each Angel individually, but I almost lost my balls. The council ragged on about how we have inadequate funding, and how we have to use what we had for the important things. Not toys that people could play with. They said that we have legs that can take us where ever we need to go.
"I only was suggesting the whole thing because then I could imprint each board with its Angel's blood. Then I could somehow manage the mechanics on a persons body. I have been reading on the subjects of auras and a body's own energy system. I think that people have a good idea with that. I believe I could make the whole thing work, but my idea was shot down once more. Now I have to go back to wave lengths and frequencies."
Zarek spoke with passion about his new accomplishment. This was something that he was most passionate about. Every break through was one step closer to solving the problems of Lucent. Of course his ideas where pulled down by the council more often than not. He never found that fair, and when ever he talked about his projects getting brushed aside he always became a little gloomy.

Rook grunted "Well it was a good try"...and a successful one, he got Zarek talking. Rook actually enjoyed it when he got like this, serious and passionate, like stuff actually mattered and it wasn't all some ball of yarn the tiger could simply bat around with one of his robots and gizmos. Zarek may act goofy but there was a reason he had gotten this far, and he was right up to par with Rook, if not above him in his accomplishments, though perhaps Rook was more well liked by the council because for all his grumbling he was more than willing to be their puppet.
All he cared about was getting the bad guy, the context or who it was funded by did not matter shinola to him. He had sworn himself to the Gates, as well as a few churches in his youth, but in his heart Lucent's entire populace was his God, and he defended it ruthlessly, with as much passion as Zarek spoke about his inventing with.
Rook leaned forward and lowered his voice "Controlling the body itself through energy? Sounds nice 'n all but wouldn't that kind of power be...problematic if it fell into the wrong hands"?

"Not controlling the body but using it as a beacon. Using it was it's own waveleangth. Having everything connected to the one person so that as long as they lived." Zarek explained leaning forwards in his excitement. "Think about it. A person having complete privacy because he was the only one that had access to the things truly important to him.
"The only problem that I can see is when the person dies. Their energy source is depleted. Their biosignature wiped from the face of the earth. I don't know what would happen to the work. Would it just respond to anyone or would it connect with the next person to touch it, or would it never work again unless it was worked on for years? I don't know."
A secretive smile crossed the tiger's face. "I want to show you something." Slipping his paw into his pocket he pulled out a glass ball that was a sliver blue color letting you not be able to see inside of it. The ball fit perfectly into the palm as he showed Rook. Expectation filled his face as he looked at the small orb.
"It may seem like nothing, but I have already put my thoughts to work. This here is a work of art and science. Just watch." Softly Zarek began to blow on the ball, as he did so it began to glow a dull white. Not only did it glow but it floated about an inch off of his palm. But that wasn't the end of it.
"You know you barley seem to give me any rest." A soft male voice was admitted from the ball. "Have you ever heard of rest? I'm sure you have because I had some time when you where gone for quite some time. I suspect you where sleeping then."
"Shh!" Zarek told the floating ball that had began to glow brighter. "Dim you light dang it." The tiger had never been one to use strong language. "I was only showing you to a friend, now I only want him to know about you and no one else so please."
The ball seemed to grumble a little before it went back to a dull glow.
"That's better, now I would like you to meet Rook. Rook I would like you to me Weddard. He is my newest creation though I have had this guy in mind before the beginning of time." The floating orb or Weddard gave a little sniff and almost look like it turned it's back on the two Angels. Of course that was hard when it had no sides. "Don't mind his manners. He is just a little grumpy at me is all."

Rook was once in a while forced to remind himself of his respect for Zarek, the thing he tried as hard as he could to push under a floorboard in his mind and suffocate. Never completely worked though Damnable man....stupid genius
Rook's reaction was a mixture of shock and horrifyingly abrupt amusement, probably the for the first time in the past few weeks he grinned, and for the first time perhaps all month he grinned broadly. "Oh I don't know, his attitude toward you ...I find it admirable.." His gray eyes shone with curiosity and his bionic claws glowed as they felt the warmth's of Weddard's energy in the air and the small humming nosie they made as they calculated was audible...but no thoughts were beamed into Rook's head, like light off a strong flashlight as they often were. Weddard was something else all right.
"How did you..."
The question hung in the air like the ball itself.

"I've been working on him for years now. This has taken up a lot of my free time." Looking around Zarek leaned forwards. "Actually it has been taking up the time I should be spending on other projects. The things all got done of course, just not to the highest degree I could have if I had spent more time on them and less time on Mr. additude." He shot a glance over at the orb.
"It took me forever to finish him though. There is too much science mumbo jumbo for you to understand so I'll give you the basic out line. He is basically alive. He is completely self sufficient. He is on a battery that can last for years. He only has to have one down day every five years so he can survive. That will slowly decree I am afraid. Weddard will die, but not before he has lived a long life, just like ours. In fact I bet he will be around three times longer than you or me.
"Rook, I took everything that we have in the Guild. Every program that we have for things like your claws, to the Skyboards have been put into him. He is amazing. I don't want to show him to the council though. I could only imagine what they would do to him. He has all our history, all our knowledge, and he can learn. They would rip him apart before my every eyes, never understanding that he is alive.
"He can feel pain my friend. Weddard is the most amazing thing you will see for a long time." Holding out his paw the orb landed in it almost lovingly. "You have to keep quite about him. I couldn't risk him ever being hurt."

"You know I won't tell those bastards anything" said Rook in a low voice, thought not unbearably low, Rook was old enough and cunning enough to be aware that he was valuable to his organization, at this time of scarcity and low experience, with so many apprentices in training, and so many Angels whom he himself had trained, they could not afford to lose him, many could not afford to cross him. but they keep on crossing anyway, they gave up their Hearts to the Gates most probably....the snakes
There was a fierce low rumble in his voice as he growled, Rook was usually cultured and calm if a bit "rough around the edges' (that was the Elder's favorite term) though he was also first and foremost a weapon, despite his love for literature, his gruff compassion and his old fashioned manners Rook had been trained and trained others, for little purpose other than to defeat and often-- to kill. This was the way Angels dealt with evil, vigilante justice, but usually efficient.

Zarek could hear the indignation in the other man's voice. "I know you wouldn't tell them anything, but things slip." Sliding Weddard back into his pocket he grinned as he remembered the girl he had bumped into while he had been patrolling two nights ago.
"I forgot to tell you, but I ran into what had to be the most ravishing women I have seen in a long time. She was like the rose among thorns. I would only wish to be able to pluck her bud, but I fear I would loose much more than blood if I had even dared to try and reach out a finger." The tiger always tended to be a little over dramatic when it came to women or even men that caught his eye.

Rook sighed at this blatant abuse of metaphors and dumped his tray in the trash trolley as it hovered by, he'd only had a few bites of his steak ( extra extra rare, as always). It was also humorous how he tapped his chin with his napkin, then folding it and giving it to the automated wares trolley in such a gentlemanly fashion considering what had been on his chin was indeed blood.
Looking sternly over at the romantic tiger he warned "If this rose happens to bloom outside the palace walls, I sincerely advise against it. The last thing you need is a forbidden romance, another secret as it were. What is it"? his gray eyes sparkled with mischeif "The Angel girls too tough for ya"?
