...So went the mantra Rook kept muttering under his breathe to calm himself down. At least his phone had no musical ringer (if he had to listen to one more "STOP IN THE NAME OF LOVE" jingles, he'd pull out his own spinal cord and end it all) , it was modern, as was everything else in St. Lucent, but he'd never felt the need to learn how to use it farther than answering it and calling numbers, and turning it on and off (he was never allowed to turn it off, in case of emergency). He diddn't even know how to put numbers in the "address book", his hyperactive mind had no trouble remembering the strings of numbers and calling them up in his mind.
Zarek's number had become an increasingly familiar sight, ever since Rook had made the folly, a day or two ago, of giving it to him out of a foolish display of newfound affection. He'd hoped that affection would keep Zarek from abusing it.
I really am a naive bastard. He thought with unabashed wonderment as his ears burned at the droning RRRRIIII-IIING. RII-IIING. RIII-ING..
He seriously considered sticking the damn thing into the nearest hot dog vendor rotisserie.
And after maybe he'd do the same to his ...whatever Zarek was to him now. Other than an annoyance.
" For the last time, I'm working. Stop Calling Me."

"But I'm bored out of my mind! I can't seem to do anything today and everyone is out working. It is your fault I got shot in the first place." Zarek knew it was unfair to use that against Rook. Heck, it was more the tiger's fault than anyone else's.
"Alright, that was unfair of me, but I just have nothing to do. They took me off my pain meds, and now I want to shot myself in the foot so I can forget about the pain in my side. Pity me Rook. For the love of all things holy pity me?" You could almost hear Zarek's arm fly over his body and land on his head so that his eyes where covered.

Rook steeled himself and refused to wince...
Okay maybe he did wince a little, that was unfair, how could such an obviously fucked up philosophy have any affect on him at all?! Zarek's whiny voice was really irritating...but also somehow effective. Maybe because of the subtle mewling quality to his smooth, crisp voice. And because he did sort of (intensely) feel guilty.
He developed an almost Teacher-like scolding tone, as he surveyed the crowd carefully, trying (and failing) to not be distracted by the image of the man's man Zarek with his hand over his eyes, swooning dramatically in a pretentious/adorable fashion.
He smiled so cynically that it could practically be felt through the phone line.
"A little below the belt huh? Well not that that's new for you in any way shape or form... Don't give me the "I'm BORED" crap, your a frickin' Angel, and you usually spend all your time in that damn lab anyway, there are plenty of things you could be doing that don't involve me in any way shape or form."
He couldn't help but sound a little cocky at that last bit.

"The only things I can think of while I am bed ridden for the day have you in them." Zarek chuckled over the phone. "Why don't you come on back here and I'll feel a lot better." He said adding a little husky tone to his voice.
"What can I ever do without you love?"

Rook's heart melted a little (and maybe a bit of his brain too on the hoarse take Zarek put on the voice Rook was already growing increasingly fond of...well at least when he wasn't mewling.) He was on duty, he would not think of the damn tiger ...no doubt sitting in one his sprawling lounges, so comfortable and confident with everything around him.
So different from Rook's jerkiness and pacing.
He would not think of what he was thinking...what he was doing on the other side of the line.
"That's...pretty damn lovely" he murmured in a slightly softer voice into the phone which was now leaving an imprint on his wrist. A flicker in the corner of his wide gray eyes caught his attention, but he couldn't resist adding.
"Cliche, misleading and more than a little slutty, yes, but pretty damn lovely...hold on a minuite". He couldn't keep the excitement out of his tone. It never dulled, these missions had no assignments or deadlines. No hit orders.
Just the thrill of the chase, for an old predator.

"Hey, hey!" Zarek shouted through the phone. Just because Rook was working didn't mean that the man would get away with calling him slutty. That was just not right.
"Well if I am so slutty I think I should go find someone that can help me with what I want. I'm sure there is someone that would let me touch them without getting freaked out that I am suggesting that we go something more than just talk. I mean you've go to get out. Talking is out dated Mutt."
Getting up he kept the phone to his ear as he left his room, and moved through the halls till he reached the mess of a living space the wolverine called home. He would do something productive today. He would clean this pigsty.

Rook wondered if he had perhaps gone too far, but he doubted it, Zarek was half bravado...he'd make it up to him later... make it up to him later Another thrill, that had nothing to do with the thief he was trailing crept into his chest like a tarantula. Zarek wasn't forcing him, but Rook did feel pressure, a kiss on the mouth wasn't quite going to cut it for much longer, for either of them.
He'd have to touch the tiger as he would a... lover ...not go all the way yet ...but more....touch as he would... [Cleo?] ...Stop it. Not now.
He diddn't want to say anything about it, but Zarek's words bothered him more than he let on. Even if was just jest...the thought of Zarek being with someone else....
His tail lashed against the frozen ground and his teeth clenched inside his unreadable frown.
I'll make sure. he thought aggressively as he rounded the corner. Make sure don't become out-dated. But there was still that fear...that inexplicable uneasiness...whenever the thought of sex with the tiger came up...Rook was struck with intense ambivalence.
He couldn't hide all of this in his tone, being distracted as he was by the criminal he was tracking, but hopefully Zarek wouldn't realize how unsettled he was.
"I'm out right now, your the one who's in" he said, with a false joking tone.

"Oh that is amazing Rook. You made a fun. Hardy, har, har." He said into the phone with a grin. "I think that you deserve an award. I mean going after criminals and talking to me. That must be one hard job." The sound of rustling papers sounded as Zarek started to work on the desk in Rook's room.
"So I was thinking that maybe you should call me back. I don't know about you, but I think that with me on the line and you chasing people, that this might not be the bested idea in the world. I don't want to get you hurt. One of us in pain is enough for that right now."
Zarek was more than happy putting along in Rook's room cleaning the whole thing up. It was keeping his mind off matters that lurked deep in his head from having been pushed back many times. With work he could keep them at bay.

"Hey, it's not my fault you kissed the corny bastard. You had about 200-something other choices, you know. " Rook said, with a smile that could almost be through the phone. He thought he heard some background noises. What was Zarek doing?
Raising an eyebrow "..I've been doing this for a long time, Zarek. Alright, I'm right on his ass, so it shouldn't be long now, it's a kid. He's pretty unobservant."
He paused and added in a slightly worried tone " Look, listen to your Doctor Zarek, I mean it, read a book...or do some Sudoko or something. Don't strain yourself".

"Pfft, I am always told stuff by my doctors and I never listen. Hell, haft the stuff that they use I've tinkered with at least once. All I did was get shot and have my lung punctured. It isn't like I am going to let that stop me. I could have had them put in a whole mechanical one if I wanted them too." Zarek rolled his eyes a little.
"Anyway, I think you should be careful. Punk kids always tend to do the stupid thing when it comes to getting caught. Even if you have been doing this a long time it wasn't THAT long ago when you started. Heck you had just been promoted to a Middle Angel when I became an apprentice and I got moved up pretty quickly. You know when they noticed that I would be better stuck inside then out of the field they pushed me up as quickly as they could."
Stepping over a stack of books Zarek let out a little grunt as his foot hit the tower and sent it tumbling down. "You know it would be a lot easier to clean your room if you had some order to your mess. But do you? No, you just kinda toss everything anywhere there is room. It is sickening you know."

"And that's something to be proud of..?....yes I'm so envious of your flawed organ" he growled, only to be stopped in surprise when Zarek said he was...cleaning....his....room.
"Hey"! he cried indignantly "Don't do that! I have everything the way I want it to be".
Rook liked things to be spread out everywhere so he could just grab them, why couldn't Jamie, Zarek or anybody else get that? It wasn't like he ever lost anything.
Well there were a few incidents with some of the apprentice forms, and a few dozen lighters, beer coozies and spare change, but diddn't all floors eat?

"Rook, if you put things away you'd be able to find them. I mean I found an apprentice form from five years ago under your bed. I have no clue how that could have stayed there for so long. This poor kid probably never made it very far because you lost his paper." Zarek let out a few tisks.
"Anyway, now there is room to move around. I'll show you if you come back safe and sound, just how well you can move around in the room. No more tripping and falling as we try to make our way to your couch. Plus I don't have to freak out every time I enter into your land field anymore because it is just a nice field now; though the color of your floor isn't that nice looking."

"I think it's bad enough to want to hide it under things" he said, still in a pouting tone, but now resigned, even secretly pleased that Zarek would actually do that for him despite being injured.
His floor was a horrid maroon color, and Rook always tried not to look at it, because it reminded him of...
... Rook's house was clean, as in, he vacuumed once every couple of days what wasn't hidden beneath piles of junk, did his dishes periodically after using them, washed the curtains and clothes and so forth, it was just extremely unorganized and gave the impression of a distinct lack of well...care, a factor that most homes having been lived in for so long had. There were no pictures on his walls, as much as Rook loved art, the only thing unique about the place was it's clutter of various written documents, some from other countries of Catori and an even greater amount from Lucent itself. He had some pretty sensitive stuff, so it was actually better that it had been hidden underneath piles of cheap mystery novels, maps, Bibles in other languages ect.
Rook was almost never there, all he did was sleep and occasionally when he walked through that door, always being quite happy to leave, that was, until Zarek came. He could see the tiger becoming depressed spending so much time in that kind of condition, that wasn't what he wanted, so if cleaning his room would make Zarek happy he supposed it was a give and take situation.
"Don't clean anymore, I'll come home and help you. " he said"You should be resting, not tripping over all my crap. Really, you have some kind of cracked out, flaming version of ADD."
Really, i'm one to talk...
"Alright, well I'd better go before he does some kind of pubescent kung-fu on me" he said semi-sarcasticly, but his lips soon quirked up, as he added, in a softer tone "See you soon", feeling a pleasant warmth as he did so.

"I think I am anything but flaming, unless that is counting my orange coloring or be being hot stuff." He shot back over the phone. "And It would be OCD not ADD. Get your accronymes right doctor."
Biting his lower lip Zarek tried not to laugh. "If he does have kung-fu moves maybe you could try to get him to try to be an angel." A little chuckle escaped from his mouth. "If he is your student though I might have some competition. Have fun!" With that the tiger terminated the call.

"Surely" Rook said to himself.
Rook clicked off the phone carefully trying not to damage it with his overbig claws and paws, sometimes he felt so ungraceful he was sure he'd sink through the floor. This did not last long though, he did allow himself a wordless grin as he thought of the tiger, perhaps not burning quite so bright as Rook often teased him for, but definitley singed. These thoughts floated away from his head, as he welcomed in a distant part of himself, a familiar stranger who took over his locomotive skills as he crouched.
He would not have any sympathy, until he'd closed the distance, for now, he was not a sympathetic creature, or even a thinking creature. He saw his quarry, and took a step forward.
